Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), also known as Sensory Integration Dysfunction, refers to difficulty taking in and interpreting input through the various senses (touch, sound, taste, smell, sight, and body in space). When sensory input is not organized and integrated properly, the following areas can be affected:
- Attention and learning
- Regulating emotions and impulses
- Participation in everyday activities
- Social and family relationships
- Self-esteem
It can be severe enough that those with SPD will feel extreme anxiety when exposed to particular sensations or seek out particular input in a way that is seen as disruptive by others.
One of the best ways to begin to address these difficulties and come up with a plan for support is through the guidance of an occupational therapist. IT4K occupational therapists work to support those who suspect a SPD or exhibit challenges in the above areas in a variety of ways:
- Assessment and recommendations for sensory support
- One-on-one therapy or small groups available
- Sensory diets or environmental suggestions
- Consultation for clients, families, and the support team to provide awareness and understanding of what is needed in order to increase daily functioning and quality of life
