What is Child Advocacy?
A Child Advocate facilitates the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) process between parents and their child’s school system when special needs programs are in order. An Advocate’s goal is to reduce the barriers between your child and having their unique needs fulfilled by their school district, to promote good communication and effective negotiation, and to act ethically and responsibly for your child’s benefit.
Laura Walls, M.S., CCC-SLP, is IT4K, Inc.’s experienced child advocate. Frequently she will attend IEP meetings to negotiate on behalf of special needs children for their individualized educational school programs with the child’s school board. This process can be intimidating if not daunting to new parents trying to get the right programs offered for their children at their school. Every child has the right to outstanding school programs that fulfill their unique needs.
